What a Pick-up Truck Can Do to Sci-Fi History

Until Richard Shaver's Rock House Studio showed up for sale on Ebay in late 2003, the sci-fi world had no clue about the tragic accident at the historic Shaver site. The current owner of the studio tells all in this Shavertron exclusive...

"What happened to the studio is that a visitor's pickup truck came rolling down the hill and crashed right into the building. There was no one in the pick up and they had been here for at least 10 minutes. A freak accident! (Editor's Note: Hmmmm...one last shot of dero tamper?)

"An antique wagon wheel was leaned up against the outside of the building and while it saved the pickup from major damage, it caused a bulldozer effect to the building. When the pickup was removed, one corner was completely gone. The remainder of the building, albeit sagging in one corner, is still standing.

It took out one entire corner the width of the pickup on one side. and about three feet of the other side.

"I don't know if anyone will want to try to repair it, but I would love to see it saved, if possible. If no one buys it, my husband will repair it to be a functional building, but not restore it to look as it did when Richard Shaver was painting in it."

The shack, along with the damaged pieces, was being offered for sale at that time on Ebay. This was a chance to own the ULTIMATE piece of Shaverania, BUT the studio was being sold as is, without the land it sat upon. No one bought the shack on Ebay. However, your editor recently contacted the owner again, and was heartened to hear the outcome...

"The studio, even before it was damaged, was not pristine, nor an architectural delight, (but then, have you looked at the former homes of famous people? Most are extremely modest.)

"My husband repaired the studio, and was able to use the original siding on the North side, but the siding at the point of impact was not recyclable and was replaced with a gray siding. After the crash, we discovered a "stash" of Richard's rock books. A couple had varnish or shellac on them....don't know if that was to make them appear wet to intensify the images, or if was to make them more like slide film.

"It amazes me that after we think we've seen everything of Richard's, more turns up! It's like it is revealed just a little at a time."

EDITOR'S NOTE: Uninvited visitors to the former Shaver home are not welcomed by the current occupants.)
