The Facts Behind The Tales

By Richard Shaver

The Shaver mystery

The subject of underworld empires runs through all ancient
literature and through a lot of modern writings in book form. It is an unending
fascination for writers, for it is such an omnipresent mystery, with so many
handles and projections and unanswered puzzles.

One runs into it in all religions. One encounters the
subject in so many different forms in so many different writings.

Greek theaters delighted in plays that included an act or
two in which. the protagonist encountered mythical creatures. Often this
encounter included a trip to the underworld.

People first encountering this endless preoccupation with
the underworld cannot grasp that there is a vast, factual background for all the
mythical, fanciful, imaginative writing about the underworld.

Dante’s trip through Hell is perhaps the best known of the
underworld accounts, and that is sad for there are many more truthful and
accurate accounts than Dante’s spiritualistic imaginings.

The truth is there is and always has been an underworld,
with people living in it. The people of the underworld are the main fascination,
but there is always the “Alice Through the Looking Glass” wonder of it to
attract one. For the underworld is a place built by superior people in the
Golden Age and it retains many magical machines, very like Ozma of Oz with her
Magic Mirror in the way they work.

A. Merritt’s accounts of the ancient underworld empire, in
the “Moon Pool”, the “Snake Mother”, and other novels, are perhaps the
most accurate in background description of the powers and the nature of the
original builders. But readers of these accounts always attribute these
marvelous descriptions to mere imaginative writing. Such readers are very wrong
in this assumption. Almost all of these writers have some very factual and
actual experiences and knowledge upon which they base their accounts. Such
accounts are fact-fiction, not entirely fictional.

These facts behind all such accounts of underworld people
and underworld magic are the great wonder that draws writers to write about
them.

What is the truth, what are the facts behind these accounts
of the underworld and under-people?

The facts are easy enough to say, to write, but tough to get
accepted as fact, yet they are not too difficult to ascertain for one’s self.

The facts are that any real exploration of virginal land
areas reveals ancient ruins of cyclopean aspect, of a mighty ruggedness and of a
weird look. In such explorations I have run into things like a “giant’s
public toilet”. Toilet seats for people twice normal size lie about, the
original huge house like a vast spring house with water still running through
it, explained to the eye just how they built such a toilet, and to trace the lay
or the original land and how they worked it all out was fascinating to me. Yet
to show the same thing to the average unseeing modern school product is
practically impossible, they see only rubble.

The top of the well-known State Park called Petit Jean in
Arkansas is a similar vast wonder. Ruins with a Khmer flavor top the mountain of
Petit Jean, and one of the exhibits is a huge piece of rock that split off the
mountain side recently, called “Carpet Rock”. Carpet Rock has a carpet-like
pattern which gave it its name, it’s an acre or so in size.

Carpet Rock, when you look at it closely, has a curved grid
of ironwork running all through it that gives it the carpet appearance. Any
examination shows that Carpet Rock is ancient reinforced concrete, with the
steel gridwork still intact and little rusted, which is a wonder in itself until
you realized that it split off the cliff recently. Hence it was sealed from
oxidation until the cliff split. The whole cliff is thus seen to be itself a
vast concrete pour, long, long ago.

http://www.viewzone.com/boulders/

How long? Well, when that dam of which Carpet Rock and Petit
Jean made parts, was operative, was the spillway of a vast dam which contained
the White River and the Arkansas River in one great impounded lake, when that
vast pour of reinforced concrete was new, is anybody’s guess, from 50,000
years to 10-million years or more.

A great many of the clippings of Charles Fort in his books
are about monsters suddenly appearing, about phenomena like reindeer which
appear on isolated little islands, graze, then disappear again. And things like
the Barbary

Apes on Gibraltar, which are there for a part of the year
only, then disappear and no one can figure how they come and go, for they are
known only in Africa across the straits of Gibraltar.

There are an endless lot of such phenomena to compile, if
you go about it like Charles Fort, clipping and saving all the news paper
accounts. All of them point to underworld passages of huge extent, and an
underworld of caverns, like the Paris catacombs, extending over the whole world
which is the great fact that emerges from all such efforts.

That such phenomena as the Abominable Snowman and Big Foot
and the Sasquatch of the west coast and Canada, and the constant reports of
weird, hair covered monsters of various descriptions, have a connection with the
underworld passages and are all related phenomena, is the inevitable conclusion
of the researcher who does this work.

Some of the weird occurrences in Fort’s pages, like the
Anaconda turning up on a London side street, or the ladybug deluge over all
Britain, or the sudden appearance of vast flocks of robins, and the rains of
toads and fish, may also be related to the cavern passages and the existence of
vast underworld greenhouses or green worlds in subterranean pockets, life
pockets, still warmed and still lit by the ancient peoples’ handiwork, in deep
subterranean pockets of life.

How does a rain of fish from a blue sky relate to the
underworld? Such phenomena relate because of the deluge, the moonfalls that
destroyed the ancient world and left us the sad surface we now inhabit and call
earth. A rain of fish as related to the decaying orbit of the moon, is a long
drawn-out theoretical dissertation I don’t want to go into. I’d rather stick
to facts but the connecting links are there and not so theoretical as they may
seem.

That a Sasquatch can turn up in a Canadian wilderness one
day, and never be seen again in that area, because it travels along the
underworld passages and emerges only when it happens upon some still unburied
entrance, is the most probable explanation.

A Sasquatch is much the same creature as Beowulf’s Grendl,
you may have read Beowulf, and Beowulf himself trailed the wounded Grendl, who
sounds very like a Sasquatch, into the underworld.

Beowulf is not exactly a factual account as it is generally
accepted today. But it is another account not dissimilar to those that get into
the newspapers today of nine-foot-tall hairy giants roaming the wilderness, and
disappearing from all who try to trail it.

The Fairy Tales of Lang are full of underworld adventures,
you know. You know it if you read them. The Twelve Dancing Princesses and the
adventures of Prince Ring with the giants and the Trolls, are accounts of
phenomena not unlike some that appear in newspapers of today, just framed in a
different format.

http://www.mythfolklore.net/andrewlang/

http://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/authors/198/andrew-lang/

The real point about the Fairy Tales is that they are very
old, dating back to before the last moon-fall. That means they are more than
50,000 years old, and are about a totally different world scene. Trolls, giants,
the little people, are all phenomena that keep cropping up in the most
unexpected places. Today we call them by different names, we call them “little
green men”, or “saucer people” or, UFO visitors, or call them Abominable
Snowmen. The whole mess of “phenomena” used to be called fairy tales, when
you get right down to it.

However, there are certain facts even in fairy tales that
one can’t quite duck entirely, no matter how much you may be squeamish at
calling them “facts”. These facts are the coincidences, the peculiar
recurrence of things like Trolls who inhabit the underworld, of
vast cavern cities with Djinni for inhabitants, of wizards who can summon all
sorts of apparitions and to trace these recurrences, these coincidences, is to
discover what Fort discovered in his news clips. That is: behind all the talk
there is a singular and recurrent phenomena that cannot be dismissed as fantasy.

This “fact” behind the fantasy is what we are after. It
is a fact because of its recurrence, just as one can’t attribute to accident a
face on a window pane when the same face appears on one thousand window panes.

Somewhere in recurrence there is a line drawn by the mind.
This is no accident and no fantasy, says reason. It is a fact, or it couldn’t
turn up so often.

To trace out these recurrences and to get them into their
proper niches and pigeonholes is what Charles Fort did best. Then, he abandoned
them. What else can one do with an impossible fact?

Just as the underworld turns up in every single country in
the religion, in the fairy tales, in the modern accounts of singular adventures
underground so one comes to the point of acceptance after some genuine research.

That point is, there is an underworld of caverns, It does contain wonders from
the past and to describe it all or to give it its just due is quite impossible
because of its vast extent and complex contents.

There is an underworld with living inhabitants. It is
tremendously ancient and has gotten itself into every single old writing in
existence in one form or another. They can’t talk about religion without
mentioning Hell, they do it every Sunday.

For instance, one can look up the oldest Irish manuscript in
existence, that dates back to the eighth century but was recopied in the twelvth
century, the “Destruction of Da Dergas Hostel” Could they leave out the
underworld? No, they could not. One finds some of the principles in the cast are
“Exiles from the Elf-mounds”. Now the Elf mounds were hollow mountains from
which every now and then some character was exiled to the surface world.
Elfmounds get themselves into so very many ancient tales of Ireland and Britain.

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?56415

https://legacy.fordham.edu/Halsall/source/1100derga.asp

http://www.ucc.ie/celt/published/T301017A/

So it goes with all really old manuscripts. They can’t
leave the underworld alone because it was a part of their everyday life
experience.

So it is today. Every writer who really tells the truth in
this area of underworld and spirit and voices and apparitions, tells the truth
about his own personal experiences, brings in an underworld in one way or
another. Writers of dreams and psychic traumas, “astral projection” and
similar phrases for mind adventures, get inevitably into cavern trips, if only
as an astral body guided on its sleep-walking way.

Putting all the coincidences together, one arrives at that
point of acceptance. Behind all these recurrences, there is an underground!

Just as one can’t accept a face or a cross on a window as
anything but an odd accident, neither can one fail to accept a thousand faces on
a thousand windows as not being an accident. Somebody put them there becomes
obvious, after a while. This recurrence can be attributed to “great minds run
in similar channels”, or it can be attributed to “little people like tales
about little people.” One can say, “Parents know that children like these
tales about little people”, so they keep telling them.

However, if you study the whole matter, the picture gets
quite different. Malevolent little people are something else again, they
didn’t tell those tales because children liked them. They told them because
they were facts of life.

And so it goes. If you really think about it, the whole
picture gets quite confusing, like a thunder storm with lightning. You can only
decide that all that lightning and the noise of thunder has one great central
truth. There is a storm in progress.

That central truth, that there is an underworld, cannot be
avoided. You have to face the fact as a fact, if you do any genuine research on
the matter. Once you acknowledge this, other facets of the picture begin to fall
into place.

The underworld was originally built by giants, by vanished
races of giant men. It has been inhabited ever since by dwarfs and trolls and
similar mythical creatures because the people who ran into the fact of the
underworld’s existence did not know what to do with it or its inhabitants in
any more acceptable words. They didn’t have any acceptable words, so they used
what words came to hand.

As the bits and pieces fall into place behind the central
fact, one begins to adjust one’s mental sights and draw a bead on some more
recurrent phenomena that indicate genuine living inhabitants still visiting the
surface world from underneath.

One of these facts turning up too often is the UFO. Where do
they come from, where do they go? Gradually one decides, if one is honest
within one’s own mind, that there are UFO and they are connected with the
underworld secrecy in some way, perhaps by some extraterrestrial commerce still
going on from the caverns of Earth to, say, the caverns of Mars.

Established, but to establish the UFO as factual takes more
than guessing. It’s like seeing drops of rain, one can in time decide its
possible one should get in out of the storm.

Or one can go on scoffing at the whole mythical fanciful
scene. That’s what many people do. But it’s there, the cavern world does
exist!

Subject: Not exactly a review
I haven't got a review per se, but some may be interested to know that the article "Immortality No Longer A Myth?" was written when the author was all of 16(!) years old. It's kind of hard to believe, even for me, and Robert L. Tanner was my father.

In his teens he was a protege of Richard Shaver. He's supposed to have published a number of science fiction works under a variety of pseudonyms, but refused to tell anyone what they were. He was at the time a huge believer in the Shaver Mystery, having run away from home to introduce himself to his idol. He was extraordinarily bright and well-read, and went on to get an advanced physics degree, after which he worked for NASA for 37 years. His children haven't come close to living up to his legend. I'm pretty sure he was some kind of genetic sport.

Anyway, I'd give the article five stars for sheer brazen BS only that would be dishonest. I love how he speaks so authoritatively of experiments and interviews that could never have taken place. He had one hell of an imagination.

"The park's unique "carpet rock" formed when crisscrossed fractures in sandstone were filled by quartz cement. Since quartz is very resistant to weather and erosion, the filled fracture lines now stand out in relief like a man-made pattern imprinted in the boulder's surface. Equally intriguing are the huge "turtle rocks," which appear to be just what their name implies." This is how they explain the concrete at Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas's first state park, created in 1933.

So Shaver was forced to continue his struggle alone. He conducted ad hoc research into the nature of detrimental energy, developing a recipe for avoiding age that involved a diet of triple-distilled water and young foods such as seeds and fruits, veal and lamb, which were relatively free of sun poisons. Due to the insidious effects of tamper, he found he could not interest scientists in this procedure. A number of mice fed the anti-dis diet seemed to flourish, but unfortunately they froze during a hard winter.

Dear Sirs:

I think I have discovered the cause of age. Please hear me out by reading this letter carefully.

If you admit that age has a cause — then you must admit that this cause is removed by the process of birth.

If the cause were a radioactive poison — as the symptoms of radium poisoning indicate (they are same as age, under certain conditions), then you must admit that the phenomena of birth is the phenomena of removal of this poison by filters through which the food supply of the young passes. The mother’s body remains old because the poison is retained in its fabric, in contact with the young replacement cells — aging them quickly. Since this aging takes place in every living thing, we must admit that the cause is omnipresent, is everywhere. Only the sun gets around the Earth that much. So the cause must be the sun. Since radium poisoning produces the same symptoms as age in even a young person — premature age — then we must look to the sun as a source of the radioactives which cause age.

It would be remarkable if the sun did not project such poisons as radium down upon us in a finely divided state. Well, it does. Consequently, we age. We all die in time from the cumulative radioactives from the sun finding their way into our bodies.

Now to prove that birth itself is but the protecting of the young life seed from this poison by filters in the mother’s body (long enough for the new life to get a good start), we need only place some mice under conditions which would exclude this poison did it exist — and observe how long they live. If they live longer than the natural life span of caged mice — we have done something to defeat age.

All right, I have done so. My protected mice live long, much longer, two, three, and when very special care is taken, four times longer than ordinary mice. My results are staggeringly indicative that this attack upon age is the correct one.

The experiments performed by Alexis Carrel and by some hydroponics experts, raising living cells in a protected condition, feeding them only artificially prepared food and triple distilled water to keep out all alien material, show — if so interpreted, that life so protected by filtration and distillation, does not die or even cease growing, but keeps on growing at an alarming rate.

That Alexis Carrel and others did not attribute their success in defeating age in these living bits of matter to the exclusion of some poison is only because this is a new and unusual view of the cause of age. They just didn’t happen to think of it. Their puzzlement over the cause of the immortality of their chicken heart muscle and tomato roots in nutrient solutions is apparent in their reports. When the theory of radioactives as the cause of age is applied to their experimental results, the mystery disappears.

Hoping to arouse some interest in this explanation of age and this remedy for age,

I remain, your friend

Richard Shaver

Dear Sir:

Your idea cannot be right because it does not make understandable why the sperm cells which multiply independently from the rest of the organism through the generations do not undergo the process. The simplest case for which your theory is obviously insufficient is the unicellular organism which propagates through simple splitting of the cell. I remember also the experiments with embryonic cells of the heart which are not degenerating in a number of years much greater than the life span of the corresponding animal.

Sincerely yours, signed

There are 3 reasons why the government needs to promote radiation as necessary for health. 1] save billions in clean up costs and enforcing current regulations. 2] they may need to fake a mission to Mars explaining away any radiation concerns. 3] save money by building new facilities less stringently and not requiring evacuation of exposed populations to future radiation accidents or failure of waste containment.

The massive dumping in the ocean of radioactive waste barrels. These corroded barrels are what caused the massive starfish die off. They literally melt away as plutonium, uranium, and thorium are absorbed into their outer membranes. Caused complete immune failure and they were literally eaten alive by massive infections. Starfish are the canary in the coal mine when it comes to radiation in the ocean. Not a virus. Viruses don't really exist. These are cellular fragments naturally occurring from either cell division or cell death.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_I_B6U0GtI

I agree with Albert Einstein that Richard Shaver's idea about new life filtering out radioactives is not the answer to aging. I still think Shaver is right about radiation causing rapid aging though. So called immortal cells die at the same rate as any other cell. The scientists mean that these cells keep dividing, but the older cells still die. Neurons stop dividing entirely and can live as long as you do.

Radiation stresses cells causing faster division rates and consuming energy resources, this may be the actual cause of aging and death. The faster the replication rate the greater chance accumulation of mutation errors.

The changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations, caused by the alteration of single base units in DNA, or the deletion, insertion, or rearrangement of larger sections of genes or chromosomes.

Full Disclosure – I was one of the three scientists from NMSU and DOE that began this study in 2007, designing the tests, providing the laboratory space, resources and funding, and setting-up the original experiments, almost a half-mile below ground in Carlsbad, New Mexico).

Since we can’t experiment on people, and it’s difficult to control random human populations with respect to radiation levels, this study focused on measuring the molecular evidence of a biological stress response in two species of bacteria, under different levels of radiation.

One species is very sensitive to radiation, Shewanella oneidensis, and one is very resistant to radiation, Deinococcus radiodurans. Both species were grown at ultra-low doses, at ordinary low doses in the realm of background, and at higher doses.

It is extremely difficult to remove radiation to ultra-low levels because radiation is so pervasive. It’s in the building materials we live in, it’s in our food, our bodies, the air, soil and water, and in all laboratory materials and food that we feed to organisms in the lab.

So we built a laboratory 2,150 ft below the Earth’s surface in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico. WIPP is our only deep geologic nuclear waste repository. It is in the middle of a 2,000-ft thick, stable, geologically-inactive 250-million-year-old salt deposit that effectively shields cosmic and solar radiation (see figure above).

The laboratory is located in the north end of the underground facility far away from any nuclear waste. Radiation levels here are 400 times below Earth surface background levels, ironic given that this is a nuclear waste repository.

The radioactivity in this salt is extremely low because it is just NaCl, table salt, that contains almost no naturally-occurring radioactive materials like uranium that occur in most rock, dirt, concrete and even wood.

In addition, we brought in an 8 ft x 6.5 ft x 6.5 ft vault made of 5-inch thick pre-World War II steel – steel with no traces of radionuclides (see figure above).

Cells were grown in separate incubators in this vault at 30°C (86°F) and 48% relative humidity. Cells grown under background radiation were subjected to 100 nGy/hr(equivalent to 0.877 milliSv/year or 87.7 millirem/year). Those grown under below-background radiation were subjected to 0.2 nGy/hr (equivalent to 0.0017 milliSv/year or 0.17 millirem/year), much lower than any background level on Earth, and the lowest levels ever obtained in these types of experiments. (**see Note below for explanation of these units)

Three independent, replicated experiments were conducted to study the effects of these two radiation dose rates on cell growth and gene expression. The DNA sequence of genes monitored were those that had previously shown significant patterns of up and down regulation (turning on and off genes used to respond to the shock or stress of a biochemical insult) upon exposure to ionizing, UV and solar radiation.

When placed in the extreme below-background levels of radiation, essentially zero radiation, growth was inhibited in both species. Both species also showed a measurable stress response, identifiable to specific genes in their DNA, when in the absence of radiation (see figures below).
Growth of bacteria is inhibited by the absence of radiation (400 times below background levels), and is normal at background radiation levels, contrary to that predicted by the traditional LNT hypothesis. OD = optical density of bacterial cultures, a measure of growth. Source: Dr. Geof Smith, NMSU

Amazingly, those responses reversed when the bacteria were transferred back and forth to the opposite environments. The experiment used reciprocal controls to verify that the physiological responses observed were due to the radiation treatment. By restoring background radiation levels to radiation-deprived cultures, the growth rate of both species increased and the culture cell density returned to that of the control after only 24 hours.

So, two species of bacteria from disparate taxonomies sensed and exhibited a physiological response to the absence of radiation, indicating that these low levels of radiation are a significant environmental cue. And the lack of radiation produced the substantial stress, not the presence of radiation.

These results contradict predictions of the LNT hypothesis. The presence of radiation ins’t necessarily bad and the absence of radiation isn’t necessarily good. I encourage you to read the complete paper for a detailed technical discussion. (This post is a bit geeky, but it’s an important issue given Fukushima and the growth of nuclear power).

Since life on earth evolved in the presence of background radiation between 1 and 10 rem per year (0.01 and 0.10 Sv/year), it appears that life is adapted well to low doses of radiation and doesn’t do as well in its complete absence.
Stress-related genes in bacterial cultures are up-regulated (turned-on) to respond to the stress of having no radiation (400 times less than background levels). These same genes were down-regulated (turned-off) to respond to normal and even higher levels of radiation (400 times greater than normal background levels) demonstrating the adverse effects of no radiation and the no-adverse effect of having low doses of radiation. This figure includes new data, obtained after the Castille 2015 paper, at high background levels of radiation. If the traditional LNT hypothesis were correct, these higher levels of radiation should turn on these stress-related genes, but they do not. Source: Dr. Geof Smith, NMSU

**Note: various pesky units are used to describe radiation dose. The U.S. unit for raw adsorbed radiation is the rad, and the international unit is the Gray. 1 Gy = 100 rad. The U.S. unit for adsorbed dose relative to biological effects in humans is the rem, and the international unit is the Sievert. 1 Sv = 100 rem. For gamma radiation, Gy = Sv and rad = rem, so it’s easy to go back and forth. Unlike for alpha radiation where 1 Gy = 20 Sv and 1 rad = 20 rem. One measures rad and Gy directly, so these low-dose experiments with gamma radiation are generally given in nanoGray (nGy or a billionth of a Gray), which is equal to a nanoSv (nSv) in this case.

So bacteria needed the low levels of radiation to thrive which they are extrapolating to include humans i guess. Anything less than enough is too little and anything more than enough is too much.

First off they can't know that. The past is assumed to have evolved over long periods of uniform conditions but that is unproved. All dating systems from C14 to potassium-argon are full of huge errors and assumptions.

Potassium–argon dating or K–Ar dating, is a radiometric dating method used in geochronology and archaeology. It is based on measurement of the product of the radioactive decay of an isotope of potassium (K) into argon (Ar).

Evolution does not exist and never did. Life arrived here suddenly and all at once fully developed from simplest to most complex. Poison of any kind is never required in any amount. Up and down regulation is adapting and compensating and is not in itself evidence for health or illness.

I wonder if the Titans really grew more cells or if the cells stopped dividing once they became immortal. Absorption of exd would uniformly increase the density and size at the molecular level. Perhaps the cells literally expanded from the inside out.

Shaver said our cells were too degenerate to even utilize exd in the growth process. Even the so called immortal cell lines are not immortal they just keep dividing.
